Help connect Spencers Wood

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Spencers Wood’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

I actually really enjoyed the route as it meandered out of Wokingham and across the countryside but as soon as I got to the new housing estate between Shinfield and Spencer's Wood I found the way blocked by construction work....

There is a lot of new housing and other development (including the Shinfield film studios and the British Museum Archaeological Resource Collection) around Spencers Wood and Shinfield in what, until recently, was open countryside, so expect temporary diversions in these areas due to construction sites....

Spencers Wood to Heckfield 1 (Spehec 1) review. A walk south from Spencers Wood, first alongside a main road, but then a quiet lane and path between a country park and water meadow. The Slow Way continues south on a path between Wellington Country Park (hidden from view) and the Wellesley Water Meadow (Photo 5). A short distance back along the B-road is a rusty gate to the footpath into Heckfield (Photo 8)....

The first third of the route from Reading town centre to Green Park mostly follows the beautiful Kennet and Avon Canal towpath until you turn off at Fobney Lock on another footpath towards Green Park. As described in previous reviews , the route leaves Green Park along a long narrow fenced-in public footpath between a Tesco depot and the M4 with the roar of motorway traffic....

A safe but dull route, almost all on urban pavements beside busy roads. Links A to B, but nothing else to commend it....

Spencers Wood to Wokingham (Spewok 1) review. There’s an urban walk from Wokingham Station to the turning onto a byway towards Arborfield Cross. The route then follows Church Lane and a footpath (Photo 4). The walk into Spencers Wood is via back streets and a byway....

The Slow Way crosses the Eastern Relief Road and soon turns right onto a footpath (Photo 2). The Slow Way leaves the lane, which becomes a private access road for farm vehicles, for a byway running parallel. The Slow Way skips a loop of the byway via the private access road (Photo 4)....

Spencers Wood to Reading (Sperea 2) review. The route heads west between the Reading International Business Park and the motorway (Photo 2). There is then a pleasant walk alongside the river into Reading (Photos 7 & 8). It’s a pity the footpath by the M4 is so grim (Reading Council footpath 11A)....

The first section of the Slow Way, from Tadley to Silchester, follows the same route as Tadley to Reading (see Tadrea 1): through woods, by The Pelican pub in Pamber Heath, and across Silchester Common (Photo 1). The footpath follows ‘The Devil’s Highway’: the Roman road between Silchester and Londonium (Photo 4). The final approach into Spencers Wood is along a wooded footpath (Photo 10)....

I wouldn't choose to walk it if I didn't need to get to those places as I agree with the previous reviewer that it has "little to commend it"...

I walked this route from Spencers Wood to Reading on the same day as I walked Sperea 1 from Reading to Spencers Wood. I left Green Park by the footpath between the sewage works and the dump - it's much nicer than it sounds but can get very muddy in winter - and then to the Kennet and Avon canal (photo 8) which I followed all the way to Reading...

Spencers Wood to Woodley (Spewoo 1) review. The walk starts by a post office in Spencers Wood, with road walking and a byway (Photo 1). The route does pass a pleasant lake and park (Photo 6). This route does meet the Slow Way criteria and I can’t see a better alternative between Spencers Wood and Woodley....
